Mediocre play with highs and lows
We are a family very familiar with the movie Frozen, and my 10 year old was wanting to see another musical so I bought tickets as a part of NYC's Theater Week.
The highs- special effects were done in a way that I think only Disney could truly do them. The transformation of Elsa, the transformation of the set- all done well. Like audience gasping well.
Vocals- awesome. For an actress to be singing in place of Adina Menzel must be intimidating. Everyone knows her voice and has been singing the songs with her for years. Was the actress as good? Of course not, but who is? She was great.
Acting- Ana was awkwardly funny. They didn't try to make her vocals shine, but she shined in her performance. I found the child actress and adult actress charmingly goofy. Christof was wonderful as well. Sven to me was moving scenery.
Costuming- again nothing less would be accepted by Disney. Well done.
The not so good-
Olaf- I realize trying to make a snowman come to life on stage is difficult. I found the puppeteer following him to be more of the focus rather than the character himself. I would think you'd want her to blend in and not be so over the top. I found the whole thing awkward and distracting at times.
Additional songs to the song book- Some fit right in, others I was wondering, "Why? Why is this even here?"
Hygge- The song/performance- why? just why? People in nude suits dancing with greenery to be "modest" I just found this out of place and not at all adding to the show
Low brow comedy- I realize there are going to be boys in the audience but seriously all the butt jokes?
